Geneva Humbert lines up behind the starting line—120 other high school girls behind her. As the gun shoots and the smoke rises from the barrel, Humbert is half way down the track.

Running cross country races takes speed, agility, and high endurance. This year’s cross country state meet was Wednesday, October 18th. There were many races, but the one that stood out was the three mile run through Sugarhouse Park. Out of 120 high school stars from all over Utah, Humbert was the only female representing Highland High.

“It feels so amazing being the only girl out there from Highland, Humbert said. “I have worked so hard this year and I am so happy to be the only one standing for Highland and my team.”

The race was ran through Sugarhouse Park. Being a park, this race was ran entirely on grass, which is a cross country runner’s worst nightmare. Along with five hills, this race is the hardest the Highland team runs all year.

“Running on grass is so challenging because it makes your shins very sore because you have to keep your ankles sturdy so that you don’t roll an ankle,” Humbert said.

Humbert finished 61st out of 120 girls. Although she said it wasn’t her best placement, she strives to challenge herself to do better next year.

“I was definitely disappointed, Humbert said. “But the anger makes me push myself harder.”

As the race comes to a grueling end, girls are crying and trembling for balance. Humbert stands with her head held high with pride, knowing that she ran a good race.
