Cards For Africa

For Highland’s 2018 fundraiser the student body officers decided to raise money to build schools in Haiti, Africa. The goal was to raise 7,500 dollars by the end of spirit week. Plastic bins were placed in every room and each class was encouraged to donate.

ESL teacher Elaine Toronto wanted her students to contribute to this cause. Most of her students are refugees and don’t have much to start with but they were excited and willing to give as much as they could. Toronto had this idea to have her students produce cards that she would eventually sell. All the proceeds would all go to schools in Haiti.

“I know my students have a lot to offer but they just don’t have the money and resources like other students do,” said Toronto. “When I told them about the fundraiser and how the kids in Haiti don’t even have a school to go to that really touched my students and made them eager to help.”

The cards were all carefully crafted with love. Each student got to make at least one card. The students’ personalities were portrayed through the artwork. Some students drew faces, designs and “Happy Valentine’s Day” greetings.

These cards can be found in the main office. The prices vary from how much the buyer wants to donate. Donations are encouraged, it never is too late.
