First Round Jitters
May 14, 2019
The Highland baseball team coming off of their best season is years put them in a position to host a home playoff game for the first time since the late 1900’s.
Highland’s pitching has been the driving factor to their success. Highland completed region play giving up just over 3 runs per game. HIghland was hoping to carry their defense into the postseason behind their ace, Graydon Lambert who is 9-0 on the season.
The Rams did not start off the game how they wanted starting the game of with a walk, error, wak and a two run double to start the game. The Golden Eagles kept the hitting off of Lambert leading to a Highland pitching change with the score 7-0. Junior Daniel Totzke came in trying to get out of the inning without any further damage. The Golden Eagles went on to put four runs on Totzke including a three run homerun. The Golden Eagles took a 11-0 heading into the bottom of the first.
The Rams with their backs against the wall couldn’t get anything going until the bottom of the second. Viking Miller lead the rams off with a double and was thrown out advancing to third. Max Moore followed up with a homerun trying to give the rams a spark. Will Koelliker followed with a triple, things were starting to look bright for the Rams. Unfortunately they only put up one run that inning.
The Golden Eagles put up seven more runs in the next two inning going through three highland pitches and put up a 19-1 lead.
With Miller, Moore, and Koelliker due up the rams were looking for a late spark. It was almost an identical turnout. Miller thrown out advancing to second, Moore homered to left, followed by a Koelliker homerun. Unfortunately for the Rams these three were the only ones that could provide offense, with a final score of 19-3.
“This is definitely not the kind of outcome we were expecting. We couldn’t catch a break all game. The good news is it’s double elimination so we will get another shot at it tomorrow”. Koelliker said.
The Rams will play Woods Cross Tuesday Afternoon hoping for a better outcome.
