At a recent signing event in the Dean Collett Commons the Highland Athletic Department and Highland community gathered to celebrate student athletes continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Highland track and cross-country racer Sabrina Wright signed with Southern Utah University alongside many cheers from friends and family in attendance.
Since she was young, Wright has always loved running, and has always been quick. In a speech given at the signing, Wright’s father told a story to the audience about the first time he realized just how fast she was and that he knew she had a future in running ahead of her.
As a Highland Ram, Wright has been very involved with Highland athletics and has participated in soccer, track and field, and cross country in her time as a high school athlete.
“I actually started track during my freshman year after I joined the soccer team and the coach told me look at trying out track,” Wright said. “I hadn’t ever run competitively before, so I was kind of nervous but also excited about it.”
Wright also competes on a competition track team and has won several awards for her race times that have secured her a regional champ win in 2023 and opportunity to compete nationally that same year.
With a PR time of 57.14 at the start of the upcoming track season, Wright is looking forward to a season of new personal bests. Specifically, she is focused is breaking a record that’s been around at Highland since 1993 and would make her the fastest female 400m track runner in 31 years at the school.
“This season I am hoping to break the school’s 400m time of 56.31,” Wright said.
Wright is also looking forward to a future in collegiate level competitions as she continues to train and prepare for a career at Southern Utah University, located in Cedar City Utah.
“I’m really excited for SUU,” Wright said. “I chose the school because I felt like I immediately clicked with the team and also really liked the coach and location of the school, so it was kind of a perfect fit.”
This year Wright is also focusing on competing as a team member in her 4×4 group that won second place at state last year and are hoping for first in the upcoming season.
“I love my 4×4 team and think we can take state this year,” Wright said. “They’re the best to run with and we all love each other so I think it’s going to be a really great season.”
