Here at Highland High, the days are all out of order. Mondays and Fridays blend together and by the time you’ve realized it’s Saturday, Sunday has already come and gone. That’s why on Tuesday, Wednesday visited.
Wednesday the camel, that is.
Wednesday the camel and B the ram visited Highland as part of Sammy’s Buddy Lunch Program, a once-a-month event run by Heather Brown that brings students from special ed and mainstream classes together for lunch to show the welcoming spirit of Highland High.
“It’s kind of funny how an animal like a camel can bring people together to just have lunch together,” Highland senior George Smith said.
This ship of the desert sailed in all the way from Tooele with Kristen Rasmussen from Otters and Others Zoo and Conservation to celebrate Earth Day and participate in Sammy’s Buddy Lunch Program.
One of their Ambassador Animals, Wednesday the camel tours the community to teach people how to cohabitate with animals and to cultivate a love for nature.
“I think the camel is amazing, and I love that Highland gets to do this Buddy Lunch and have such great activities here,” Kate Davies, a junior ram, said. “I think we’re super lucky to be able to see this because this is my first time seeing a camel and I’m sure it’s the same situation for about everyone else here.”
The event also included a pledge for students to sign, committing them to help protect the planet and the many different life forms that share residence.
“I think camels are really cool,” Lila Johnson, a junior at Highland, said. “It’s a good way to get the students involved with the Buddy Lunches.”
The next event will be held on May 14th in the library, although sadly Wednesday the camel will not be making an appearance.
“They [Buddy Lunches] are super awesome,” Johnson said. “I want to go to another one.”
