In a testament to academic excellence and personal dedication, Highland High School’s Kaemon Andreou-White has emerged as a shining example of Utah’s best and brightest, earning the prestigious title of Sterling Scholar for Mathematics. A unique blend of creativity and analytical thinking, Kaemon has joined a legacy of students who exemplify leadership and academic prowess.
“A lot of Sterling Scholar is about your category, but a lot of it is also about your service and your ability to organize yourself and your academic achievement as well,” Kaemon says.
Kaemon’s approach to mathematics emphasizes problem-solving over traditional memorization.
“The math part of it was very much can you logic yourself through a problem, and even if you don’t necessarily know the answer, how do you approach it?” Kaemon explains. This focus on reasoning and strategic thinking highlights his ability to tackle challenges creatively.
Beyond academics, Kaemon has diverse interests, which complement his well- rounded portfolio.
“I like music a lot. I like doing art and listening to music. I play a lot of instruments. I like guitar. I play drums and I sing. I have a lot of things I really like to do. I guess I just really like art,” Kaemon says.
Kaemon’s mother, Chrisoula Andreou, offers insight into his development over the years.
“Kaemon has always been drawn to both creative and analytical thinking. He’s excited not by mechanical problem solving, which can be repetitive and boring, but by interesting concepts. That partly explains why, for parts of grade school, Kaemon was actually not too keen on math—which might seem surprising for a math Sterling Scholar!” Chrisoula says.
Kaemon’s initiative has also become apparent throughout his Sterling Scholar process.
“I didn’t even know he was applying at first. He just applied and then told me he got an interview. I was really pleased that he has the initiative since, as the saying goes, ‘You miss all the shots you don’t take.’ Life’s successes are often about working hard and then being at the right place at the right time with the right skills.” says Chrisoula.
Reflecting on the program’s impact, Kaemon shares his appreciation for the possibilities Sterling Scholar may bring to his future.
“Just honestly participating in the rounds after just the school level. I think it is a great opportunity because you get to go to interviews at a higher and higher level. I just think it’s a great opportunity and I’m so honored that they have allowed me to go through this process,” says Kaemon.
His mother echoes the sentiment of the impact of his experience.
“I think he’s already gained the valuable opportunity of preparing for an interview that required him to really reflect on and articulate his academic and social values.” says Andreous.
Looking ahead to college, Kaemon remains committed to mathematics.
“In college I definitely want to keep doing math because it’s important for any career you’re going to have.” says Kaemon.
His family believes his curiosity and persistence will guide him forward into his future endeavors.
“He is very curious and so often enjoys immersing himself in very demanding work when it is interesting; he is also very persistent, which is super important.” says Andreou.
As Kaemon prepares for graduation and looks toward college, he plans to continue including mathematics in his future studies. He carries with him not only Highland High’s pride but also valuable lessons about creativity, resilience, and initiative. His success serves as an inspiration for future scholars who dare to dream big and work tirelessly toward their goals.
