Freaky Fans and Fierce Play: Lady Rams Destroy East in Biggest Rivalry Game of Season
January 7, 2015
The Rams were fierce, the fans feisty, and well the costumes, they were even freakier. Everyone from the students in the Black Hole to the coaches on the bench were ready to destroy the East Leopards in one of the biggest rivalry games of the season. Many wait all year for this one game, and much goes into the costumes and getups that you’ll see in the crowd as well as the training and hardwork that comes out of the team.
With so much support, Highland’s Women Basketball Team was ready to give it their all. The girls came out strong, scoring several points in the first few minutes. Both teams battled hard but with East leading 20-16 at half, the coaches and players both felt like there was more in them that needed to be released. Coming into the second half, the Rams did just that. Playing like a complete different team, they ripped the Leopards to shreds. They began to gain momentum, and with help from Macy Wilson and Marlee Machon combining 27 points, Highland left East in shock, the final score being 49-34.
“Freak East was the most fun I’ve ever had in a game. Everyone felt the excitement whether they were on the court, or not. We rallied second half and picked each other up to take it back over,” Marlee Machon said, the leading scorer for the Rams.
Marlee states that her 14 points this game came from her teammates, and that she couldn’t do it without them.
Senior, Sylvia Schulte, played her last Freak East game along Marlee’s side, and was thrilled with the results.
“I’m happy to leave my last Freak East game with a win and use that energy to keep going forward with this season,” Schulte said.
For Schulte and many others, this game was a huge win. Not even Kuea Angilau, East’s leading scorer, with a total of 12 points in the game, could stop our Lady Rams.
For Highland the first game of the season seems to be off to a good start, and hopefully our Lady Rams will use this win as momentum for the rest of the season. The Rams came to perform tonight and they could not have done better in front of their freaky fans.
