Dance Company Delivers Passionate Performance

Highland Dance Company’s concert “I Love It” had a successful opening night on Thursday, March 19. The concert was a mixture of both modern and classical dance, using hip-hop, ballet, and modern dance to show off the dancers’ impressive range of styles and techniques. Many of the numbers were choreographed by the dancers themselves, allowing them to show off their creativity and passion for the company.

Highlights of the concert include a number that resembled an 80s workout video, with the dancers clad in colorful spandex, crop tops, and headbands. The number included a mash-up of a number of popular 80s songs, and the dancers also used exercise balls as props. Another crowd favorite was a number entitled “I Love Swing,” which included familiar music from movies such as Grease and Dirty Dancing. In this partner dance, male students of Highland were able to show off their skills along with the other dancers. This fun and light-hearted number was very funny and energetic. The number “I Love Ms. Carter,” which featured music from Missy Elliott, demonstrated the company’s skills at hip-hop dancing.

There were also more serious numbers in which the dancers’ movements were slower and more deliberate. The dark lighting and costumes also contributed to the sense of drama and power that surrounded these numbers. In various numbers, the dancers’ bodies were lit in a way as to only show their silhouettes, making them look mysterious.

The company’s seniors also had an emotional number, entitled “I Love Beautiful Endings.” In this number, the seniors were able to dance together while celebrating all of the memories and experiences that they had shared together.

Overall, this concert was a perfect mix of light-hearted and more serious numbers, and allowed the dancers to show off all of their skills and hard work. The mix of modern, ballet, and hip-hop dance ensured that the concert would have something special for each audience member. Each group of dancers was able to receive time in the spotlight, but the show also highlighted the hard work and dedication of the company’s seniors.
