Jake Boren and I strolled half-heartedly into the lunchbox waxing salon on 1135 E. Wilmington Avenue in Sugarhouse, holding our heads low, hoping that no one we knew would see us walk in. The white washed walls and stylish, yet functional furniture greeted us as we closed the door. I grabbed a Tic-Tac from the bowl on the counter and a bell from somewhere rang, calling our stylist, Gwen, to the lobby. After discussing our ordeal with the stylist, I decided to get the upper lip wax, which is the most popular male waxing that they do, followed by eyebrows and chests.
Having called in and making the appointment beforehand we were taken straight back through the building to the couple’s waxing room, a closed space with a sort of doctor’s table in the middle.
I was asked to sit down on the table and use the moist toilette that I had also just sat on to wipe off my face, focusing on the area being waxed. After talking us through how they were going to wax me, Gwen pulled out a tongue depressor, some special looking cloth, and a small glass jar out of a heated drawer.
Gwen kept talking as she applied the wax from the jar to my upper lip with the tongue depressor, placed the cloth on the top of….
“THWAP!”
Before I even knew what was happening, my lip was clean! Gwen took a few more passes over with the hot wax pad just for good measure.
Then it was over. With my lip clean and my pride left mostly untarnished, we all exited the room.
I after that I thanked Gwen and Boren left.
The whole experience was much faster and cleaner than I thought. It honestly barely even hurt! The staff and actual salon were awesome and accommodating. I would probably go back if I needed to be waxed again.
