Truman Cannon was recognized for his excellence in business this year with the Sterling Scholar award business and marketing. Multiple individuals interview for this award, but only the best student in each high school is given the award.
“I am super excited and grateful that I received this award,” Cannon said.
Cannon’s love for business didn’t just stem in high school. He had his own business role model living in his own home.
“My dad was always my biggest inspiration, because he grew up in a family that did not have a lot of money,” Cannon said. “But through business and hard work, he was able to create the life he wanted.”
Growing up, Cannon would often get into conversations with his dad about various company moves and personal experiences that his dad Joel learned from his own work.
Seeing Joel work hard, and build his own success in life, was motivating for Cannon. It kept him motivated him to stay dedicated and push himself. When asked about his interest in business, Cannon shared that he is a believer in aspects of business being present in all facets of life and in all different work fields.
“I believe everything is business related,” Cannon said. “You need business skills to navigate many aspects of life, and it applies to every career field.”
Business skills can be essential for navigating various different situations in life. From pushing ideas on other peers, to getting along with classmates or coworkers and learning to work together, the skills of good business are always present.
In high school, Cannon gained a lot of experience working with others in his student government class, and even worked with some friends to launch his own juice business.
“My favorite class in high school was definitely student gov.,” Cannon said. “I got to be involved with the student body, and meet so many great people.”
Outside of his life as a hard-working student and young business man, Cannon keeps himself very busy with his other hobbies.
“Outside of business, I love skiing, mountain biking, camping, and hanging out with friends,” Cannon said.
Through spending time in the outdoors and working hard to become a better skier and biker, Cannon has instilled discipline and learned the persistence it takes to master something.
Following high school, Cannon plans to attend the U of U where he wants to pursue finance and see where his passion for business might take him.
