At Highland, there are countless ways to get involved within the school, however, every year there is a huge portion of the student body that is not involved. One of the main causes for certain students not being involved is the fact that they simply don’t know of ways they can invest themselves. For Highland’s upcoming school year, newly-elected student body vice president, Annie Miner, plans on using the senate organization to change this dilemma.
As vice president, Miner will be in charge of organizing and overseeing the senate group. It is their responsibility to uphold the school’s constitution, as well find ways to improve the school and foster student success. Even though this is an essential key to the school, their work seems to be behind the scenes.
“The first thing is that senate definitely needs to be publicized more,” Miner said. “My past three years I have never known or heard of how to get involved with it. I didn’t know how to join it or even how it worked.”
However, senate is not the only Highland-improving based student organization group. Forum is another group of students who is focused around improving other different aspects of Highland. While these two groups have some of the most crucial jobs in the school, Miner claims neither are publicized nearly enough for the students to know that they exist and that they want people to run for positions and get involved with them.
“These two groups are both very important to the school,” Miner said. “They deserve to be publicized and heard about throughout the school. It is very important that we make these more of a priority next year.”
Although senate may be a selected group of students, Miner’s main goal is to make everyone within the school feel like they are a part of the organization and their voice and opinions can be heard just as loudly as any selected members. She plans on finding ways to include all different aspects of Highland and make it clear to all students that senate is there to hear them and take into account what they want to see done within the school. By individually recognizing each member of senate through pictures around the school, Miner believes this will help students get to know the senate members better and actually see which students they can open up to about their opinions and ideas.
Organization is the key to keeping a school group sharp and thriving. By creating a presidency within senate, Miner believes this will establish a sense of credibility and keep everyone working hard and staying inspired. If senate is able to come together with not only forum, but also student government, this group of leaders will be able to all work toward and accomplish the same goals. These groups coming together and working as a group will provide an example to students around the school of how to come together as well.
“The more people you have working together to accomplish the same goal, the more you will get done,” Miner said. “Also by expanding this group as recognized leaders within the school, you will have more of a variety of students who all come from different groups, therefore causing more students to have a connection to the senate program.”
