The Highland High Rams Women’s soccer team matched up against Olympus and it was an epic showdown. This is the second time they’ve played this season and you could tell on both sides that they were ready for each other.
The soccer game lacked the scoring aspect of the sport as it ended 0-0 in a tie. But the game had all the exhilaration for both the fans and the players that a game would have had that was 8-8. The ball went back and forth through the field every time one of the teams finished attacking the other team would counter with an attack if their own.
This led to a very close first half as both teams had many chances to convert and neither were able to capitalize because of the great defenses of both teams. As the first half wrapped up the score obviously was still 0-0 but the tension and excitement of the game was enough to give someone a heart attack
Both teams came out of the half extra hungry because their had been no goal and they both wanted to be the first to strike. This meant more and more offense and increasing amounts of tension on the field between these bitter rivals. Naturally like in any rivalry there was some gritty play that ended up in fouls and in multiple cases yellow cards.
As they were nearing the end of the second half the red card was pulled out as senior Freedom Flowers got her second yellow card of the game which results in a red card in soccer. This not only meant that she had to leave the game but that Highland’s team would have to play from there on with ten players against eleven.
As the second half came to a close both teams circled up to get ready for the golden goal overtime. This means that the first team to score on either side wins the game. It was a super even overtime just as the regular game had been going back and forth the whole time. This kept everyone on the edge of their seat waiting for that ball to find the back of the net and one of the teams to go crazy.
The Rams made a great run at the goal at the end of the golden goal to try to score. This run ended at the feet of Elise Francis who had just shook a defender and now had a hard shot on goal. She took the shot and it was like the ball was in the air for a few minutes but it bounced off of the Olympus goalies hands and it gave Highand the corner. Shortly after the overtime was called and they would have gear up for one more ten minute period to decide this game.
This ten minutes was the climax of all the intensity that had built up throughout the game with each team getting at least two or three chances on goal and both defenses stopping the runs in their tracks. Then the game was called and it was officially over after 4 different grueling periods the game had ended in a tie.
Highland had a great game and performance even though they weren’t able to find the back of the net they will look to build on the positive things they did as they go into a matchup against West later this week.
