Every year as the end of spirit week approaches the anticipation of class rivalry at the spirit assembly rises to reach an astonishing height. At the assembly different competitions are added each year, but some remain fairly consistent, one of which is the obstacle course. Two students from each class race against time to see who can complete it the fastest. As usual, the seniors took the lead, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t other impressive performances.

Many of the obstacles are considerably difficult and likely not easily completed without an athletic background. For many of the participants the wall is a looming threat. But for Joe Johnson, a sophomore, it was the challenge he was most excited for, jumping it with confidence and coming to the end with an impressive time.

The whole school showed extreme enthusiasm for the event, as it was the first one to take place when school spirit was at its highest for the day. The heckling between classes is all in good natured fun, because when a student needed encouragement all the classes where there for their fellow students, making it a fun experience for the competitors.

“[My favorite part was] just all the stress that went into it and trying to finish as fast as you can,” said Kate Murdock, a freshman competitor in the event.

Murdock came in with a time near to one minute. The obstacle course made for a great event to open the close of this year’s Highland Spirit Week.
